From the supplier: Young franchises demonstrate higher incidence of business mortality and lower profitability compared with independent business startups. This was revealed by the results of an analysis of the formation of some 20,000 young small businesses throughout the US from 1984 to 1987. Results also showed that young franchise startups are mostly found in the retail trade, which often fall under the high-risk, low-return category. These results affirm the hypothesis that business sectors where franchising is prevalent appear to have been saturated, thus reducing the chances for success for new entrants.
